This museum tells us the story and history of an uprising of school children during apartheid era in South Africa. It all started on June 16th, 1976 when Soweto school children protest against the mandatory use of Afrikaans as a language in black secondary schools. These students were to meet at Orlando Stadium. On their way the police stopped them to end the march. Students didn’t obey and this is where the violent confrontation starts. A lot of people died in this uprising.

The Mandela House is situated within the heart of Soweto on the southern side of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is located at Vilakazi Street where most of Soweto’s history is. The Mandela House represents the heritage for Nelson Mandela’s family and the people of Soweto. After Nelson Mandela has separated from Winnie he handed the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust. Winnie refused to relinquish the house and turned it into the Mandela Family Museum and also set up a pub and restaurant across the road called the Mandela restaurant. This Mandela Family Museum contains paintings, assortment of memorabilia and photographs of the Mandela family as well as a collection of honorary doctorates bestowed on Nelson Mandela from Universities around the world.
