You might think that the above title is a bit odd considering that I am a director of a Digital Media company that offers search engine optimisation as one of its services. The aim of this blog is to share with you some of the experiences that I have had during my directorship of not just this company but other companies I have owned.
The very reason I sit here today is because of these experiences and how they gave me inspiration to build my own team of brains and get away from the constant head blagging, bullshitting sales people who often act like starving dogs. The very people who I have proved don’t know what they are talking about.
One of my first negative experiences of this type was way back when I approached a local company to build an ecommerce website for the business I was involved with at the time. Back then it’s fair to say that I didn’t know my arse from my elbow when it came to websites, how they worked or anything, all I knew was that I had to get online with my products, I was a total newbie with a big budget and like a lamb to the slaughter I entered the lion’s den.
The company we approached put me in touch with one of their quick witted smart talking sales men (who happen to be one of the owners too), we all know the type, the ones that can sell sand to an Arab or ice to an Eskimo, he was great at sales talking and to be fair as I had little knowledge he could have told me that the website was powered using dreams and fairy dust and I would have believed him. He could talk the talk alright, a big shame he couldn’t walk the walk because for all the promises he made the website he delivered was unmarketable mirror image crap that set me back a huge chunk of cash. This was the first time I got burned by a smart talking sales man that promised the world and delivered nothing and taught me that I need to know more than they do to be able to stop this happening in the future. We wasted about a year trying to get this website ranking in reasonable positions before the reality set in that we had to have the website redeveloped if we stood any chance of success.
Working closely with another somewhat smaller company we achieved this to a degree but the problem I then found was that the new guys we used were great at building cool slick looking websites but they were designers by nature and were not marketing orientated. I didn’t know this at the time, again down to the learning curve, but in order for a website, especially ecommerce to do well in the search engines it has to be dynamically designed with both user friendly usability and marketing in mind. Hindsight is a wonderful thing…….
Fast forward a few years and with my partner and myself taking time out to learn as much as possible about online marketing and website design we managed to get our ecommerce website designed and built by the correct team of people with the correct strategies behind the scenes and the website was ranking well at last, in fact using our wealth of knowledge the website is still performing well today. We don’t own it anymore as we sold the company on but we still maintain the new owner’s websites and our online marketing strategies ensure that this website is in a No1 position for some very competitive keywords so the lessons I learnt here were that you need to choose an SEO or design company wisely but before you get to that stage it is vital that you at least understand the basics of what you need from them, how else can you be sure you are getting what you need if you don’t know yourself what that is?
We have taken this and other parts of the learning curve over the years and used it to our advantage as we now know how to design a website that the search engines just love and how to rank them in good positions too.
So that’s the background of how we got into the online marketing world and started building websites and creating marketing strategies for other people but the story doesn’t end there…..
