Internet of things has started to gain attention as well as traction in recent few years. The organisations as well as the end users have started to cater to a multitude of various smart objects like smart fridges, smartwatch, air traffic control technology, environment monitoring systems, space satellite systems, human pacemakers and so on. But when understanding it from a security perspective, the Internet of Things and its developers must come to focus on the data that is captured, processed, and communicated between these devices.
Cloud had also undergone a similar evolution. Five years ago cloud was simply a stagnant model but today cloud is a full fledged architecture chiefly in the form of Platform as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, Software as a Service and even Security as a Service.
The biggest challenge that comes along with IOT is the issue of security. With so many devices linked together and deployed on millions of untrusted locations, several unscrupulous tasks could occur on the sensitive data being captured. The information that is gathered could vary as the data processed through smart fridges will be so much different than it be generated by an air traffic control system or a stream of tsunami detectors.
Cryptography that is used to encrypt data and delivering identity for devices is the focal point of security for undermining safe identification, confidentiality and consolidation. Nevertheless, these are the basic technologies that we use to secure every other website found on the web. The coming years are more important in term of security of the data whether it be scattered/unscattered.
