Rexroth’s Sytronix variable-speed hydraulic pump drive earns product innovation award from Green Manufacturer® magazine

Bosch Rexroth’s Sytronix variable-speed hydraulic pump drive won a Silver innovation award from Green Manufacturer magazine for its ability to reduce energy consumption and lower noise emissions.
Award recognizes Rexroth’s Sytronix variable-speed hydraulic pump drive for its ability to lower energy consumption and noise emissions.

Green Manufacturer® magazine, a leading North American trade publication focusing on sustainability practices in the manufacturing realm, named Rexroth’s Sytronix intelligent variable-speed hydraulic pump drive as a Silver award recipient in its 2013 Green Manufacturer Product Innovations competition.

The competition was open to technology developers and manufacturers that have introduced new products designed to ensure environmental sustainability. Winners were selected by an awards committee consisting of esteemed industry experts from diverse companies, who evaluated the Sytronix product features and capabilities, as well as Rexroth’s manufacturing and sustainability efforts, according to established criteria and verifiable data.

“We were impressed by the imaginativeness and eco-performance exhibited by the winning entries,” said Kate Bachman, Green Manufacturer editor.

Compared to conventional hydraulic systems, where an electric motor constantly powers the hydraulic unit, Rexroth’s Sytronix variable-speed hydraulic pump drives regulate the speed, and thus the energy consumption of the electric motor, according to the demands of the machine – providing power and hydraulic pressure only when required.
    image
Depending on a machine’s cycle characteristics and power rating, the pump drives achieve 30 to 80 percent energy savings – especially in common applications like metalworking, metal pressing and plastics processing.

In addition, Sytronix can reduce the energy consumption needed to cool the hydraulic fluid, since the variable-speed operation reduces heat build-up.
    image
As an extra benefit, the Sytronix variable-speed system can also lower the average noise emission of the hydraulic power unit by up to 20 dB (A).

Bosch Rexroth’s commitment to sustainability was also a key factor in the award. The awards committee reviewed the Sytronix cradle-to-grave lifecycle design as well as Rexroth’s manufacturing and sustainability practices.

With several manufacturing sites throughout the United States, Bosch Rexroth has implemented numerous initiatives to improve sustainability. All of its U.S. manufacturing sites are ISO 14001 registered. The ongoing “Go Green” program in its two largest manufacturing facilities is on track to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 percent in the next seven years from a 2007 baseline.

In addition, the company’s Fountain Inn, SC location was recently named as a South Carolina “Manufacturer of the Year,” due in part to its environmental initiatives, called “Fountain Green,” that encompass the reduction of hazardous waste, the promotion of recycling and the introduction of sustainable alternatives to traditional solvents and other chemicals used in manufacturing. The facility has also reclaimed nearly 100,000 hydraulic pumps from the field for re-use, so they can be refurbished and put back to work instead of going to landfills.

The winning companies will be highlighted in the July/August 2013 issue of Green Manufacturer, and on the web at www.greenmanufacturer.net.

Green Manufacturer is published bi-monthly by FMA Communications, Inc, which is affiliated with the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, International®.
